Greetings!
Hallo again. It always seems to brighten my day when
I see the latest edition of Salt Speak pop up on my
computer screen. Compared to the technology we use
currently, the first editions seem rather crude now.
This newsletter is as much intended to be a tool and
information resource for you our customers, as it is
intended to be a marketing showcase for you who are
interested in Salt PureŽ but have not, as yet decided
to move ahead with your own system, or to specify
one for your customer.
We would therefore be happy to gather feedback from
you all as to what you would like to see discussed or
featured in an upcoming edition. Whether it is a
photograph and piece on your Salt PureŽ facility, or a
request to highlight a certain aspect of managing a
commercial pool. The choice is yours, and we would
welcome the input.
As the weather warms all around the country, I wish
you a fabulous summer, and look forward to talking to
you as the opportunity allows. Note the information in
our "Safety Corner" and do take care.
Timothy Petsch,
President,
TMI Salt Pure Corp
White Bear Racquet & Swim
White Bear Racquet and Swim Club in White Bear Lake,
MN, opened for business in 1988 and converted to Salt
PureŽ water in September 2003. With approximately
3,000 current memberships - translating into roughly
5,000 adults and around 2500 juniors - on a busy
Winters day, White Bear will check in 1200 to 1400
people.
The 130,000 square foot facility includes 35,000 square
foot 5 court tennis bubble that is taken down for the
summer months, 5 more tennis courts in a super energy
efficient tennis building, 10,000 square feet of fitness
equipment, 3 group exercise studios, a
basketball/multipurpose gym, 6 lane lap pool, whirlpool,
wading pool, outdoor deck and pool, locker rooms with
steam and sauna in each, racquetball, a six treatment
room spa, café, sport shop, and a nursery for children 6
and under.
Regarding their conversion to Salt PureŽ water, Paul
Steinhauser, General Partner, had the following to
say at a recent interview:
"Our angle at the White Bear club of trying to have
environmental sensibility while improving the customer
experience was important to us and the TMI Salt
PureŽ system really held the promise of doing that.
After three years of interfacing with Timothy at the
IHRSA show, while assessing the competiton, he had
the most credibility and I appreciated his approach.
Also, not being scientists, we liked the idea of fewer,
bigger cells rather than smaller multiple cells. Our
system was installed by our Building and Operations
Manager, who had always operated the pool but had
never been a contractor. The support that he received
from Timothy over the phone gave him everything he
needed to get the job done. The support that we have
received since that time has also been excellent.
I CAN SAFELY SAY that the TMI Salt PureŽ system is
THE ONLY IMPROVEMENT that we have made in the 15
YEAR HISTORY of our Club that has RECEIVED A 100%
POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP. Contrary
to the old saying, in this instance, we really did please
all the people with this change which is very unusual!"

NEW - TMI SP 110 Controller |
 |
We are pleased to be able to announce the release of
the TMI Salt PureŽ Chemistry Controller. The controller
features 3 programmable relays, available in 110vAC
24vAC and Dry Contact, both Normally Open and
Normally Closed; and a remote access modem. I have
personally spent hundreds of hours working with
chemistry controllers in a salt environment, and firmly
believe that this controller will work more effectively in
a Salt PureŽ body of water than any other controller
on the market. The remote access modem allows
simple programming of all 3 relays and seamless
support. The controller is compatible with all types of
water bodies and is competitively priced. This picture
is of Mile 21 - a private residence in Montana that is
using the TMI controller on a Salt Pure body of water.
The dealer who installed this equipment has his
comments featured below under customer comments.

UPDATE
ON PHOSPHATES by Timothy Petsch |
 |
We are seeing more and more incidents of Phosphate
contamination, so I spent a little time looking into this
issue and these are my findings:
Firstly, some sequestering agents that are used for
stain control actually use phosphates (Phosphonic
Acid) as an ingredient. Secondly, Municipalities will use
phosphates to assist in cleaning out the water lines, at
times. Thirdly, many cleaning agents use phosphates
such as TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate). Lastly, of course,
the usual - bather contamination.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Firstly, check that your chemicals and cleaners are
phosphate free. TMI carries a full line of Speciality
Chemicals that are phosphate free. Secondly, talk to
your Water Municipality to ascertain if they
do, in fact, use phosphates. If they do, I suggest that
you request that you be informed about their
scheduling in your area so that you can be prepared
with an effective prevention program. Thirdly, raise
your Cl residual to 3.00PPM so you have a "bank" of
sanitizer to combat the contamination. Lastly, TAKE
ACTION - ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE A RELIABLE
PHOSPHATE TEST KIT, PHOSPHATE REMOVER, 4 - 1
CLARIFIER & 3 MONTH ALGAECIDE available. FOR
EFFECTIVE PREVENTION,
TEST FOR PHOSPHATES WEEKLY AND ESTABLISH A
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. Note the
test kit will not register correctly at levels lower
than 200ppb.
HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOU HAVE A PHOSPHATE
CONTAMINATION?
Preliminary signs of a contamination are that you are
using more Chlorine than usual, or the Salt PureŽ
equipment is running at 100%, and the Chlorine
readings are going down, but the water still looks
clear !!
SOLUTION:
Test and treat for phosphates. We have listed the
3 "punches" that are required to effectively treat for
phosphates later in this newletter - 1) PHOSPHATE
REMOVER 2) 4 IN 1 NATURAL CLARIFIER 3) 3 MONTH
ALGAECIDE. In combination these will restore your
contaminated water to it's usual crystal clear look!

TECH TIPS |
 |
Installing new parts?
It's a smart idea to use a permanent marker (Sharpie)
to note the PART INSTALLATION DATE, on the part
itself. This allows for easy identification later on, if the
item is submitted for warranty.
For those of you that use the Acu-Trol controllers,
make a note in your Preventative Maintenance
schedule to CLEAN THE FLOW CELL EVERY 6 MONTHS.
There is a chance that oils and such in the water could
cause the Flow Switch barrel, housed inside the Flow
Cell, to stick up against the relay and cause a "Flow"
situation when there is no flow. This could potentially
cause chemicals to be added to a system that is not
flowing and may cause damage to equipment.

SAFETY CORNER |
 |
A huge problem facing us as an industry is drowning.
The number 1 cause of death in swimming pools. A
significant number of these fatalities can be avoided by
ensuring that the drains, especially in spas. Note that a
˝ HP circulation pump can exert 200 pounds of suction
per square foot. This could be a potential killer in your
facility just waiting for the accident to happen. Today
this need not happen. There are two ways to avoid
this:
1. Install an "anti-ensnarement cover" for your main
drain. They are available, as a retrofit for most circular
drains. Ask your supplier or call us for more information.
2. Convert your single main drain to a dual anti-vortex
drain. This is best done during a scheduled closure of
the pool for maintenance.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE |
 |
..An ounce of prevention.. we all know how this one
ends but many of us find it difficult to implement a
program of prevention. There are many areas to be
addressed in an Aquatic environment, from the locker
rooms to the mechanical rooms. I have always favoured
CREATING CHECKLISTS and SCHEDULED ROUTINES.
This is made so much easier today with all the
computer programs available to remind us to do things,
(although we have to be careful, as computers can
crash !!) In this edition I am going to address
SPECIALTY CHEMICALS. In future we can talk about
other
areas. If you have an area you would like us to address
please let me know, or if you have a story about
preventative actions we would like to hear from you.
Talking to folks who have been in this industry for some
time, one gets the sense that once there was only
Chlorine and pH balancing products with which to
control a commercial pool. The solution to many
problems was to just add more ! CHEMICALS HAVE
EVOLVED INTO AN IMPRESSIVE RANGE OF PRODUCTS
THAT ASSIST IN PREVENTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY
OCCUR, a novel approach in the pool industry. Let's
examine some that we recommend:-
PHOSPHATE REMOVER:
Up to now, most phosphate removal products
contained lanthanum carbonate. Lanthanum carbonate
is a mineral that will trade a carbonate ion for a
phosphate ion, if present, in an aqueous environment.
The compound resulting from this exchange, lanthanum
phosphate forms an insoluble precipitate that will drop
to the bottom of the system over time. The
precipitate would then have to be vacuumed from the
pool. The entire process could take days or even
weeks to complete and would raise carbonate levels
that contribute to scale formation. THE NEW
PHOSPHATE REMOVAL METHOD PROVIDES THE MOST
EFFICIENT WAY AVAILABLE TO REMOVE OR LOWER
PHOSPHATE LEVELS. A CHLORIDE BASED FORMULA;
one quart of Phosphate Remover is capable of taking
1,000 ppb (parts per billion) of orthophosphate out of
20,000 gallons of pool water, in less than 24 hours,
especially if used in conjunction with Natural Clarifier.
NATURAL CLARIFIER:
This product was originally developed to clear seawater
for underwater photography and has been used in many
underwater Hollywood Box Office movies. THIS IS THE
ONLY CLARIFIER THAT WORKS WITH THE NATURAL
POWER OF CHITOSAN; its environmentally friendly
chemistry removes organic material by encapsulating
body and suntan oils, cosmetics and soaps, and
prevents them from combining with swimmer wastes
and forming unsightly scum deposits.
BY REMOVING ORGANIC MATERIALS FROM THE
SYSTEM, FILTER ELEMENTS AND MEDIA DO NOT GUM
UP AND ALLOW FOR MORE EFFICIENT FILTRATION
WHILE EXTENDING THE LIFE OF THE FILTER.
3 MONTH ALGAECIDE:
ALGAE growth is unsightly and places a significant
load on the sanitizing and filtration systems; A LOAD
THAT CAN OVERLOAD BOTH SANITATION AND
FILTRATION, RESULTING IN UNHEALTHY BATHING
CONDITIONS. The copper in 3 Month Algaecide is
securely bound in a triethanolamine complex
PREVENTING STAINING.
It optimizes the sanitizing efficiency of disinfectant
systems by KILLING EXISTING ALGAE GROWTH AND
PREVENTING FUTURE OUTBREAKS. This has been an
effective tool for outdoor pools which are naturally
more prone to algae contamination.
